Her Name is Beautiful!

We got THE call this morning!  Our girl is gorgeous!  She is so perfect, I cannot even tell you!  She just turned seven and no, she doesn’t have all her baby teeth, but I’m OK with that.  The only measurements we have are a year old, so we asked for new sizes!  I think all the size 5 clothes might work!  Bonus!  And her name is beautiful…. and it means light.  Perfect.

I’m exhausted and thrilled and teary and overjoyed and overwhelmed and giddy and I keep staring at this darling little face on the computer screen!

Hurry Up and Wait Again

Last Thursday I received an email from our agency, Gladney, asking for our final I-171H from USCIS!  That is good news…. it means we have been matched with are darling Zaza!  We were told that THE CALL should come next week. “Yeah,” she sarcastically thought in her head, “I’ve heard THAT before!” But I think it might be true this time!

So this new alternate reality of waiting with some renewed hope for our almost-four-year adoption saga to be coming to the apex of the journey, is draining.  These are a few of the fleeting thoughts I’ve had to deal with lately:

We need to pick a middle name for her!!!!  Yes, we will keep her first name, as she’s probably become quite attached to it after 5 or 6 years.  We bestow on all our children family names for the middle name.  Someone mentioned to me lately that Linda would be a fine name.  I had NEVER thought of it until that moment.  Hmmmmmmm.   (Linda is my name, in case you didn’t know.)

Where will we hang her bath towel???  There is only one bar in the kid’s bathroom.

Will she be able to get up on her bed, or do we need to buy a stool???  Oh, I saw a darling stool at Marshall’s with butterflies on it! Her bed is quite tall.  Hmmmmm.

What if Rick is flying when THE CALL comes???  We’ve discussed that one.  We’re taking the call immediately and he can see his little girl when he gets home.  I’m all for family togetherness, but I’m not for waiting any more!  At all.

I’ll keep you posted!

Waiting for the 817 Area Code

We are on day #25 of our 30 day window when our referral call will come.  This is exhausting.  My hot pink cell phone is glued to my body from the moment my eyes pop open until 3:00 p.m.  The call will come from Texas and they are two hours ahead of us… and they stop working at 5:00.  I breathe a disappointed sigh of relief every day at 3:00.  “OK, another day down.  Another day closer to the call!”

Fridays at 3:00 totally wear me out.  It means I have to wait until Monday morning.  Last Friday afternoon I collapsed on the couch and didn’t recover until Sunday afternoon.  Good grief!  This is like the last few weeks of pregnancy when you’re so tired you’re cross-eyed and frazzle-brained.

We found out this week about some unexpected fees…. to the tune of an extra $1840.  If you’re the praying type, please pray.  If you’re not the praying type…. I don’t recommend adopting internationally.  It’s a faith walk.  But faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.

Hold on, Zaza!  We’re coming for you in November!  Buckle your seatbelt, sweetheart, there’s a ton of love coming your way!  XOXO

Don’t Get Your Panties in a Wad!

One of my favorite lines from the movie The Blindside. I’m taking that advice today, as I just got an email from our case worker.  Today is Day #4 of our 30 day window to receive our referral call.  Here is what she had to say about our referral call:

“I can almost guarantee it won’t be any time in the next two weeks.  Normally we get a call after you have been matched to a child so we know the documents are on the way to the translator.  Then it takes about a week to translate before I have the information.  I haven’t heard anything from our in-country team so that is why I assume in won’t be in the next two weeks.”

I’ve kind of assumed that the 30 day window for the referral call was just a 30 day countdown until the call.  As with everything else involving international adoption…. the wait has been LONG.

It’s all good.

Jump Time!

Since our file was sent to Valle del Cauca 29 days ago…. that means our referral time frame of 30-60 days later STARTS TOMORROW!  Can you say JUMP JUMP JUMP?  I’ve been asked if I jump when the phone rings…. not until now.

Corresponding exactly with August 30th is the start of HOMESCHOOLING for year number TEN here at L.A.K.E. Academy.  Normally I don’t answer the phone when we’re doing school… but that all changes tomorrow!  Sorry, pupils.  I will need to emphasize the importance of staying in your seat and continuing your work if Mama/Teacher does answer the phone.  Usually if I happen to take a call, my children stealthily disappear.  I eventually hang up and find myself alone.  THAT is why I normally don’t answer the phone.  NEW RULE!  Stay in your chair, buster!

I’ve discussed the actual referral call with my husband/pilot on several occasions lately.  If the call comes and he’s on a flight…. he suggested waiting until the next day to get the information, so we could sit together, in blissful unity, looking at our girl’s darling face for the first time with each other.  I don’t think so.  I cannot wait.  Sorry.  If he is sitting in his office that particular day and can blast home in 30 minutes, I MIGHT be able to wait that long.  But NOT 24 hours.  Hello?  What do you think I am, a patient, caring wife?  Well, I am… sometimes.  :o)

On pins and needles.

Minimal Minor News

The only adoption news lately is:

1.  I just bought the most darling pair of pink plaid Converse for Zaza.  Totally darling. (OK, I know.  Hurting news.)

2.  Our media drive had taken an upswing these past two weeks with several large donations and over $400 in sales on ebay this week!  Wooo Hooo!

3.  Matt continues to cook for Matt’s Meals with a Mission, where he goes to other people’s homes and cooks dinner for them.  How do you say thanks to an almost 18 year old kid who donates 75% of the money he earns to your adoption????  I can’t figure it out either.  We are humbled and blessed.  MMM has also earned over $500 so far!  Wooo Hooo!  THANKS, Matt!!!!

4.  I’ve missed the last two conference calls.  Lame, I realize.  I’ve been swamped with traveling for speaking because of my new book release, and I haven’t even called to make a “new information call” appointment.  THIS week it will happen!  I promise.

5.  Sad news:  we did find out that if we don’t get our referral call by Nov. 3rd, Zaza will spend yet another Christmas in Colombia…. while I cry again  putting the kids’ ornaments on the tree.  :o(

But it could happen!  We serve a BIG God.  It’s all in His capable hands and we’re resting in His timing.

The Paper is in My Hand!

Yesterday we received our “Notice of Favorable Determination Concerning Application for Advance Processing of Orphan Petition I-600A Extension” or the I-171H form.   Whooooo HOoooo.  We are now approved by our government until August 27, 2010!  (Dear Lord, Let it be in 2009! Amen.)  Our fingerprints expire AGAIN on September 12, 2009.  That will not be an issue if we travel soon!

News from Bogota:  Gladney’s attorney has been awaiting an appointment with the gentleman at ICBF to get the update on our place in line on the waitlist for 5-6 year olds.  I understand he has been on ‘vacaciones’ and is supposed to be back in the office today for tomorrow.  So we will have a number soon!

I’m officially ready for our referral phone call.

New List from ICBF

The list just came out from ICBF with the dates of the latest adoption referrals from Colombia.  It helps us “waiters” to gauge, sort of, when we might expect a referral call.  Oh, that glorious day!  This came out on Feb. 24th, 2009:

Age of Child / Date of Application Approval by ICBF

Child 0-12 months / Sep-2005
Child 13 – 23 months / Sep-2005
Child 2 years / May-2005
Child 3 years / Feb-2005
Child 2 – 3 years / Mar-2006
Child 3 – 4 years / Apr-2005
Child 4 years / Jun-2005
Child 5 years / Jan-2006
Child 4 -5 years / Jan-2006
Child 5 – 6 years / Mar-2007
Child 6 years / Sep-2008
Child 7 years / Sep-2008

The list didn’t change much from December, as the government agencies in Colombia take holidays from Dec. 15th through Jan. 15th.  The red ones are the new ones.  But as you can see for the child who was 6 who went to their forever family…. the family’s approval date was Sept 2008.  OURS IS FEB. 2008!  So when ICBF receives our upgraded age request and makes a note in our file, the CALL COULD BE SOON!  This is good news for us.  I would love to spend July and/or August in Bogota…. instead of Phoenix, but this is not about me… right?!?

I also just figured out that I would be OK with the call coming soon.  I was freaked out about my book deadline, but even if the call came tomorrow, there is enough time for me to finish writing several weeks before we would travel.  That is of course, assuming I could concentrate on writing after receiving the referral call… which is highly unlikely.  I’ll be making lists and shopping and bribing my brother into watching our dog.   But I’m more at peace with the whole deal at the moment. <3
