One MONTH!

Yesterday, January 22, 2011, marks ONE MONTH that Nora has been home with us.  It seems so much longer!  She has adjusted so well!  In our adoption training, I think they gave us several worse case scenarios, which left us apprehensive.  However, with those horror scenes in mind, our transition time has been wonderful.  We were warned of troubles sleeping and eating, which are the two biggies for kids who change cultures.  But Nora has slept well since day number one, in her own bed with hardly a blip on the radar.  There are foods she likes a lot (chicken, beef, garlic mashed potatoes and pineapple) and foods that she will eat, but are not her favorite (spaghetti, lasagna, and green salad).  We think she was slightly addicted to salt and sugar.  She asked to add them to everything!  I mean everything!  That has been put to rest along with her coffee drinking.  I still heat her milk for her each morning, but it now has chocolate Ovaltine…. like warm cocoa in the morning.  :o)

I’ll be there for You!

Today I went to lunch with a girlfriend who is also an adoptive mom.  She told me her “gotch ya” stories and I almost burst into tears each time when she received her babies!  It is so awesome how God brings families together.  I love to hear each story!  Somewhere throughout our conversation, I told her about a group of adoption maniacs who all live in Tennessee.  (You know who you are!) I read their blogs and have become friends with them.  I am supremely envious when each of their new babies have come home in the past six months from Colombia, China and Ethiopia… and they ALL go to the airport to celebrate the homecoming of a newly adopted child.  It’s awesome!  Anyway, my friend promised me that she would come to the airport even if we come home at 3:00 in the morning!  So sweet.  Made me want to cry again!  So thankful for supportive friends!

Her Name is Beautiful!

We got THE call this morning!  Our girl is gorgeous!  She is so perfect, I cannot even tell you!  She just turned seven and no, she doesn’t have all her baby teeth, but I’m OK with that.  The only measurements we have are a year old, so we asked for new sizes!  I think all the size 5 clothes might work!  Bonus!  And her name is beautiful…. and it means light.  Perfect.

I’m exhausted and thrilled and teary and overjoyed and overwhelmed and giddy and I keep staring at this darling little face on the computer screen!

Hurry Up and Wait Again

Last Thursday I received an email from our agency, Gladney, asking for our final I-171H from USCIS!  That is good news…. it means we have been matched with are darling Zaza!  We were told that THE CALL should come next week. “Yeah,” she sarcastically thought in her head, “I’ve heard THAT before!” But I think it might be true this time!

So this new alternate reality of waiting with some renewed hope for our almost-four-year adoption saga to be coming to the apex of the journey, is draining.  These are a few of the fleeting thoughts I’ve had to deal with lately:

We need to pick a middle name for her!!!!  Yes, we will keep her first name, as she’s probably become quite attached to it after 5 or 6 years.  We bestow on all our children family names for the middle name.  Someone mentioned to me lately that Linda would be a fine name.  I had NEVER thought of it until that moment.  Hmmmmmmm.   (Linda is my name, in case you didn’t know.)

Where will we hang her bath towel???  There is only one bar in the kid’s bathroom.

Will she be able to get up on her bed, or do we need to buy a stool???  Oh, I saw a darling stool at Marshall’s with butterflies on it! Her bed is quite tall.  Hmmmmm.

What if Rick is flying when THE CALL comes???  We’ve discussed that one.  We’re taking the call immediately and he can see his little girl when he gets home.  I’m all for family togetherness, but I’m not for waiting any more!  At all.

I’ll keep you posted!

Waiting for the 817 Area Code

We are on day #25 of our 30 day window when our referral call will come.  This is exhausting.  My hot pink cell phone is glued to my body from the moment my eyes pop open until 3:00 p.m.  The call will come from Texas and they are two hours ahead of us… and they stop working at 5:00.  I breathe a disappointed sigh of relief every day at 3:00.  “OK, another day down.  Another day closer to the call!”

Fridays at 3:00 totally wear me out.  It means I have to wait until Monday morning.  Last Friday afternoon I collapsed on the couch and didn’t recover until Sunday afternoon.  Good grief!  This is like the last few weeks of pregnancy when you’re so tired you’re cross-eyed and frazzle-brained.

We found out this week about some unexpected fees…. to the tune of an extra $1840.  If you’re the praying type, please pray.  If you’re not the praying type…. I don’t recommend adopting internationally.  It’s a faith walk.  But faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.

Hold on, Zaza!  We’re coming for you in November!  Buckle your seatbelt, sweetheart, there’s a ton of love coming your way!  XOXO

Neighborhood Group Garage Sale Report

Our neighborhood group from our church, CCV, is awesome!  They came together and put on one supremely successful garage sale to help with our adoption funds!  So far we have raised $1,675!! And we pulled out a bunch (meaning 200 pieces) of designer clothing that is being consigned tomorrow.  That should bring in several hundred more dollars to put the total over $2,000!!!  The date that was chosen for the sale was during my annual scrapbooking retreat… so I wasn’t even around!!!  The troops turned out en masse and took care of everything!  We are so blessed to be surrounded with such supportive friends!

Thank you!!!  Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

(I realize I ended almost every sentence with an exclamation mark, but I needed to exclaim how wonderful our group is!)

USCIS……my new friends I call every day.

We were a tad on the tardy side sending in our second application for our I600A, a grandfathered application because our adoption has taken so long.  I sent it off with three weeks to spare.  Well, I have since learned that you send it to Texas and someone opens the packet, checks money amounts and expiry dates, sends notices and then eventually sends the file off to Missouri.

Well, we received a Notice of Action stating that our application was being suspended because we sent the $670 for the I600A application, but not the $170 for biometrics.  (That’s fancy talk for fingerprints.)

Our fingerprints don’t expire until December, so I didn’t send the extra $170.  This confused them….. greatly.  I have called and talked to nice people at the USCIS offices seven or eight times now trying to get this cleared up.  Finally on Friday, I asked for a supervisor…. I was done getting no where with those lower on the totem pole.  Voila!  It worked!  I got a call today from the officer assigned to our file and she indeed confirmed that no biometrics fees were needed.  Yes!

BUT, she did inform me that our Home Study Extension was more than six months old and we needed an updated one.  Great!  I called our local agency who did our homestudy (all three times now) and they are taking care of business in a flash!

Thankfully, the officer also told me that the date they receive the application needs to be before our old 171H expires, and we’re good.  We made it by two weeks!  So all is good.  Just tardy… again.

What will I do all day when Zaza is finally home???

Don’t Get Your Panties in a Wad!

One of my favorite lines from the movie The Blindside. I’m taking that advice today, as I just got an email from our case worker.  Today is Day #4 of our 30 day window to receive our referral call.  Here is what she had to say about our referral call:

“I can almost guarantee it won’t be any time in the next two weeks.  Normally we get a call after you have been matched to a child so we know the documents are on the way to the translator.  Then it takes about a week to translate before I have the information.  I haven’t heard anything from our in-country team so that is why I assume in won’t be in the next two weeks.”

I’ve kind of assumed that the 30 day window for the referral call was just a 30 day countdown until the call.  As with everything else involving international adoption…. the wait has been LONG.

It’s all good.

Our FBI Prints are BACK!

WOW!  That only took six business days!  I was expecting W-A-Y longer.  I still have to send them off to West Virginia for the apostille, but still this was one quick return!  Hip hip hooray for the FBI!

One week from today is THIRTY DAYS after our file was sent to Valle del Cauca!!!!!  Our referral could come starting next MONDAY!  Bring it on, baby!

I’m Losing Sleep

This is exactly like the end of a pregnancy…. I wake up and my mind goes CRAZY!  And I can’t go back to sleep.  I’m just not going to the bathroom every twenty minutes like big-belly pregnancy

We are exactly one week from the 30-day mark from when our file left ICBF and was sent to Valle del Cauca.  We’ve been told we will get the referral call within 30-60 days.  That could be NEXT WEEK!  After all this waiting for almost four years…. you’d think I’d be plenty ready.  But I’m all jittery and anxious and restless.  The heightened anxiety level has completely erased the minimal Spanish that I knew only a month ago.  I’m not sure what to do about that.  I think it’s too late for ginkgo biloba!   Ha ha!

I’ve finished Zaza’s tea-table and it has three coats of minwax for protection.  It probably needs about eight coats!  Not wanting the painting and decorating to end… I bought a little seat from an adult vanity.  I’m going to turn it into a sink and stove top for Zaza’s little kitchen in her room.  I need to keep these hands busy!!!
