Onward Christian Soldiers

We heard that there are no little 5-6 year old girls for our family in the region of Valle del Cauca.  So our file is being sent back to Bogota.  We remain on the top of the very high pile of family files, which is good.  We will have another regional assignment soon, and then the customary 30-60 day wait for a referral.  I’ve had high hopes before, but I’m already seeing the very real possibility of only 5 stockings hung by the chimney with care AGAIN.

God is still on the throne.  He still has our little girl picked out that is perfect for us…. and we are perfect for her.  His timing is also perfect.  (I keep telling myself that over and over.)

Waiting for the 817 Area Code

We are on day #25 of our 30 day window when our referral call will come.  This is exhausting.  My hot pink cell phone is glued to my body from the moment my eyes pop open until 3:00 p.m.  The call will come from Texas and they are two hours ahead of us… and they stop working at 5:00.  I breathe a disappointed sigh of relief every day at 3:00.  “OK, another day down.  Another day closer to the call!”

Fridays at 3:00 totally wear me out.  It means I have to wait until Monday morning.  Last Friday afternoon I collapsed on the couch and didn’t recover until Sunday afternoon.  Good grief!  This is like the last few weeks of pregnancy when you’re so tired you’re cross-eyed and frazzle-brained.

We found out this week about some unexpected fees…. to the tune of an extra $1840.  If you’re the praying type, please pray.  If you’re not the praying type…. I don’t recommend adopting internationally.  It’s a faith walk.  But faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.

Hold on, Zaza!  We’re coming for you in November!  Buckle your seatbelt, sweetheart, there’s a ton of love coming your way!  XOXO

Neighborhood Group Garage Sale Report

Our neighborhood group from our church, CCV, is awesome!  They came together and put on one supremely successful garage sale to help with our adoption funds!  So far we have raised $1,675!! And we pulled out a bunch (meaning 200 pieces) of designer clothing that is being consigned tomorrow.  That should bring in several hundred more dollars to put the total over $2,000!!!  The date that was chosen for the sale was during my annual scrapbooking retreat… so I wasn’t even around!!!  The troops turned out en masse and took care of everything!  We are so blessed to be surrounded with such supportive friends!

Thank you!!!  Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

(I realize I ended almost every sentence with an exclamation mark, but I needed to exclaim how wonderful our group is!)

Don’t Get Your Panties in a Wad!

One of my favorite lines from the movie The Blindside. I’m taking that advice today, as I just got an email from our case worker.  Today is Day #4 of our 30 day window to receive our referral call.  Here is what she had to say about our referral call:

“I can almost guarantee it won’t be any time in the next two weeks.  Normally we get a call after you have been matched to a child so we know the documents are on the way to the translator.  Then it takes about a week to translate before I have the information.  I haven’t heard anything from our in-country team so that is why I assume in won’t be in the next two weeks.”

I’ve kind of assumed that the 30 day window for the referral call was just a 30 day countdown until the call.  As with everything else involving international adoption…. the wait has been LONG.

It’s all good.

I’m Losing Sleep

This is exactly like the end of a pregnancy…. I wake up and my mind goes CRAZY!  And I can’t go back to sleep.  I’m just not going to the bathroom every twenty minutes like big-belly pregnancy

We are exactly one week from the 30-day mark from when our file left ICBF and was sent to Valle del Cauca.  We’ve been told we will get the referral call within 30-60 days.  That could be NEXT WEEK!  After all this waiting for almost four years…. you’d think I’d be plenty ready.  But I’m all jittery and anxious and restless.  The heightened anxiety level has completely erased the minimal Spanish that I knew only a month ago.  I’m not sure what to do about that.  I think it’s too late for ginkgo biloba!   Ha ha!

I’ve finished Zaza’s tea-table and it has three coats of minwax for protection.  It probably needs about eight coats!  Not wanting the painting and decorating to end… I bought a little seat from an adult vanity.  I’m going to turn it into a sink and stove top for Zaza’s little kitchen in her room.  I need to keep these hands busy!!!

We Got Our Regional Assignment!

There it is…. Valle del Cauca.  Which means Zaza could be in Cali, which is what I have been praying for.  Fellow Gladney mom, Kelly, was in Cali last week picking up her darling GG.  Kelly’s entire Colombian stay was three weeks to the day!  She comes home tonight from Bogota.  She reported the courts in Cali are fast, as well as the attorney is professional and speedy too.  YES!

Of course, my beach-loving 16-year-old took one look at the regional map and is hoping for Buenaventura….right on the BEACH!

This is so exciting…. but still doesn’t tell us all the little details I’m earnestly awaiting…. like her NAME!  And her size.  And does she have dimples?  And does she have all her baby teeth still?  And how old is she?  I’m not very good at waiting.

Adoption “Fun”draising

When we acted on our call to adopt a little Colombian princess, we had no idea how God would accomplish this great dream in our hearts.  We have been amazed, amused, humbled and blessed!  At the moment 82% of our funds are in, but with all international adoptions, we have one last large lump to raise.  I’ve been inspired to get Bags For Zaza rolling again.  My sister-in-law, Jennie, started it two years ago…. sewing messenger bags, purses and totes to raise money for Zaza to come home.  I believe BFZ raised over $6000!!!  Then we all got busy and overwhelmed with life and it came to a screeching halt.  I’ve been cutting out bags whilst on vacation, so I can sew when we get home!  I’ll keep you posted for upcoming auctions.

We also have been encouraged by friends and neighbors who are jumping on the bandwagon to bring our little girl home.  Our neighborhood group is scheming as well.  Wonderful friends! Please pray that God will unveil where the remainder of the adoption funds are hidden…. while we work like it depends on us, but pray and believe like we know it depends on God.

Needing a Wardrobe

Since I’ve finished homeschooling and am impatiently waiting for Zaza, I have been making things for her.  I made a dolly and now I’m mass producing a line of clothing that will soon need its own wardrobe.  I play my Spanish cds on the laptop while I sew, and I stare at the map of Colombia above the sewing machine…. wondering what part of the country she is in.  Here’s the latest:

We can’t wait to kiss your soft cheeks, Zaza!

We Actually Got News!

Yes, it’s true.  We found out we are number TEN on the waitlist for 5-6 year olds at ICBF in Bogota, Colombia.  That is great news.  From last July to January, we were moving up the list at four places every three months…. then we hit 2010 and it slowed a bit…. We moved five spaces in five months.  Hopefully things will speed up this summer!  Less kids go home in January than any other month…. well, probably tied with December.

It’s not exactly like the number placement is a sure thing either.  We moved onto the 5-6 year old list (from the 3-5 year old list) and moved right into our acceptance date position…. moving everyone down a number who was approved after January 2008.  Also, if any families join the list who have Colombian descent, they move to the top.

Here is an explanation from our case worker as to what happens next:  “once your dossier at the top of the list it is transferred to a regional ICBF office to be matched to the child at the regional committee meeting.  Then the referral paperwork is processed, sent to the translator, and then finally is sent to me.  As soon as I have it I will be giving you a call, but from the time the dossier is sent to region to the time we have the referral is an additional 30-60 days I would estimate.”

So there you have it.
